Accessing programs on Freesco from another web page?

Postby rbw » Tue Jun 03, 2014 1:49 am

Hi,

I have used a freesco box to manage my home network for quite some time and have recently needed to register a domain name and set up a public webpage for my work.

I would like to expand my webpage and need to perform some calculations. Unfortunately my host company cannot run any of my software on their server, and the code is not suited to PHP.

Do you think it may be possible to run some software on the freesco that can be accessed from my web page? The web page would send a few variables to the freesco, it would do the calculation and send a file back to the web page for display.

Ideally I would not like to fun a web server on my freesco. I was hoping to set up a link in ssh?

Can some one please suggest some software that I can read about?

Thanks in advance,

Robert

Using the web server is really the simplest solution using a CGI script and it would be simple enough to add a couple of extra firewall rules so that only the work server can access it. You also could run it on a non-standard port. The built in web server is very efficient running CGI scripting and standard HTML code.
If you are afraid that you might make a mistake. The chances are high that you will never learn anything.

If you rather not run a web server on your FREESCO (although when you limit access either via firewall rules or .htaccess files, the risk is limited) and your hosting provider supports PHP, then maybe have a look at http://phpseclib.sourceforge.net/. It's a pure PHP implementation of the SSH protocol. I haven't tried this myself, but worth a look.

Here's another interesting solution that might just work: http://www.yiiframework.com/wiki/592/tunneling-using-ssh-in-a-limited-enviroment/
